I think that it is different in NwN, because mages level up ALOT FASTER, besides, you can get that huge half-orc guy (with the double axe) as a henchman when Aribeth tells you to go to "The Trade of Blades" he is great to have as a henchman. plus, you can summon a familiar and a monster. All you have to do is equip a crossbow or spell, and stand in the back.
