Ooh, I can think of quite a few things that a mage is better off carrying than dual shortswords. In no particular order: Bow, Crossbow, Staff, Buckler & Longsword, Buckler & Shortsword...
I leave dualing SSs to rogues, normally.

Wait, a buckler for mages? Don't bucklers carry a casting penalty? Cause if they don't then I sure have been missing out! Thanks!
