One of my best friends is a lady who at the time was in her late 40's (she's in her 50's now) who used to be a gametester for Steve Jackson games and knows many of the designers. She's an avid gamer and will probably remain so throughout her life. As far as console games go (Sega, Playstation, NES, etc.) I'd imagine that was dominated by the teen/preteen market, but then again, I may be mistaken. I have been before. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif http://www.wizardrealm.com/images/sazerac.jpg |
P.S. In reference to the above post, I myself happen to be 37 years old, male, and an instructor in Networking and Web Design at an IT school. Kinda breaks the stereotype, doesn't it?

I am a 51 year old female and have been playing computer games for a long time, at least the last 20 years. BGII is my first D&D game. Have enjoyed: Wizards & Warriors, Thief I & II, Deux X.

Saz,
Love that signature!!! Didn't you draw that yourself? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif Regarding the playing age of console games, sadly it does seem to be mostly youngsters. The games (especially Nintendo) are geared towards a certain audience, that being very young players, between the ages of 4-12. And why? Because they don't have money, but their PARENTS do! I grew up playing Nintendo and loved their games, but I always thought they were a "mickey mouse" company with too many rules and regulations. Today, they have sold out for "Pokemon"...and all of their old fans have mostly left them. There was a sincere lack of adult subjects and situations in their games. When I started playing more PC RPG's, I was happy to see what Nintendo was lacking. Still, a lot of great games and their sequels were started on the old Nintendo 8 Bit system. Sadly, most of those really good game companies (mostly Capcom, Konami, SNK and Square) left Nintendo an went on to make games for Sega, Sony and other companies. So, to let this question be answered, anyone who has been a long standing fan of a games like Castlevania, Mega Man or the Mario Brothers would have to be a bit older, for those games all started about 15 years ago in the late 80's. Myself, I'm 26 and I run across a lot of older players who remember the golden era of console gaming in the 80's and 90's. The funniest part is, that the Sony Playstation was originally made my Nintendo! No joke! I remember back in...hmm...around 1990-1991 or so Nintendo annoucned that they would be making a new system that played games off of CD's. The super nintendo was out and doing pretty well, but this new CD based system would have capabilities that would leave cartridge based games in the dust. They had pictures and spec sheets, and companies like Square started talking about the games they would be making for this system, and it sounded like video games were going to a whole new level. As many of you know, Square's biggest seller has been the final fantasy series, which started on the nes many years ago. I really enjoyed their early games, but after a few sequels, the game degraded into the pseudo anime teeny crap that Final Fantasy is today. But, nearly 10 years ago Square had forshadowed these future games on a CD engine in their newsletter! A while later, for no apparent reason, Nintendo stopping talking about the CD system like it had never existed. Not one word. I remember writing to Square about what had happened, and they said something that indicated that Nintendo had backed out of the deal. Well, as the story goes, Sony was working with them and Nintendo basically backed out, but Sony took their CD system and went on to turn it into the Playstation, which as you know is an extremely popular system! Although I never owned one, I've seen the wide variety of games for it and think its a great system. So if I havent lost everyone, us old gamers know the history of what happened, and all of those old companies got a start back when I was a teenager. Although I dont own any consoles anymore, whenever I see a new game out, I smile and remember the good old days. There are more of us out there! Out of the woodwork! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif Scronan |

I used to have an Atari console when I was young - I remember being really impressed that there were something like 120 versions of Space Invaders on one cartridge! How things have moved on (thank goodness!). Some of the games were quite playable though. I also had a 'pong' game - if you weren't careful you ended up with white lines burned into your TV screen. Ahh - the nostalgia. ------------------ http://www.gldb.com/wayno/epona2.gif Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so. Epona of The Laughing Hyenas and The Ladies Guild. |
Scronan: Thanks for the kudos on the sig! Yes, I did do the barb by hand (or mouse). Tough artwork! It payed off, though.
It's too bad about console gaming going kiddie. I personally think that if I see one more damned Pokemon thing on the Internet, I'll puke all over my keyboard. I think even the kids are getting tired of it. However, it's for that reason that I will always remain a PC gamer, even with all the bugs and inconsistencies. Question, though: how many decent RPG's are made for the console market? I mean REAL RPG's...not adventure games. Are there any? http://www.wizardrealm.com/images/sazerac.jpg |
