Re: Fall 2009 Design Contest

As this is a participant judged contest, I think it takes a majority of us to do anything. :)

So, Olivier, what are you proposing? It sounds like we may be open for suggestions. ;)

I am quite happy with my release. :D It could simply be better - but I guess one aim of the contest is that all of us have the guarantee that our designs will be reviewed, so that we will know what can be improved...
I rather wanted to give the message: "Don't mind if you do not have covered all aspects of the contest, release what you have on Dec 20th, and then, we can decide how to proceed."
I am quite sure that some of us will be able to start a "final rush" on Sunday... :)

I will go with the flow...

If we're strict about the 20th and I'm not done, at least to a point where I feel comfortable with a release, I just won't upload (at that time). :)

I still will get the tutorials done. I am going to do them in a separate design anyway. That way people will be able to open it up in their editor and look at it. That's right, I'm not using .914 for my contest entry. :D I am putting in many hours beta testing the latest engine and editor that Paul has worked on, and I don't really have time to do an entry and testing separately...and it turns out that once you've saved (a few hundred times) in a new version, you can't go back to version .914.
I think you'll forgive me.

*sigh* :biglaugh:

I admit that moving the deadline could result in more slackiness on my part, I certainly won't get it done before the end of January then. Then again, designing for DC shouldn't feel like a job... unless there's a prize involved; hm, what about $100 for everyone meeting the deadline? (Mind you, I'm not offering to pay!) ;)

Like I said before, I'm not sure if I will still work on my design in case I manage to create an acceptable version until the 20th. Instead of encouragement the end of the contest would probably bring me closure which might be both a good and a bad thing. I think I can live with it, but as a reviewer I would prefer playing designs that don't feel unfinished...

Well, whatever the other contestants decide.

So, the 20th?

If it's moved by more than a day or two, I will start to slack off as well. :D I can tell myself and you that I won't, but I will. ;) Something about an old dog and new tricks...

Unless Budzo, Uatu and Rosestar all come in asking to move back the deadline, I think we should plan on it being the 20th. If we're don, we're done, if not, we're not. (I know, how very Zen of me.)

I would like to do as Dinonykos suggested - release my design on the 20th and then release a platinum or diamond edition a little later. :D:D:D

Re: Fall 2009 Design Contest

I too am OK with what anybody wants to do (being the new guy, I don't really expect a vote anyway, but it is always nice to express an opinion).

That said it is doubtful I will have something I am ready to share with others by 12/20. On the other hand I finished work for the year today (forgetting the three conference calls I have from home tomorrow), so I will have a lot of time to work on this and to be honest I am not that far away from the goal line. A few days (say to Dec 23) would help me a lot, although I need some more time to make a commitment.

The trap and secret passage were done a long time ago, but I have not done much towards writing a tutorial. I would prefer to do this during the "judging" period, as there is no way I can do it properly without more time. Also I wonder if there is going to be some redundancy between the entries. For example, while my secret passage involves two event chains, about 13 events and 2 GPDL scripts, the main event that opens the way and changes the graphic is covered very well in manikus' tutorial and I am not sure repeating that adds a lot of value. Maybe we should look at the designs first and coordinate how the tutorials are presented. Just a thought I will do whatever people want. I firmly believe that the tutorials need to be done, the existing ones have been very valuable to me and we need to do more of this.

Thanks again

Budzo

I just went to the other site and saw the screen shots from two of the other designs and am now thinking I just oughta forget the whole thing. They are awesome and way beyond anything I can do.

Then again the reason I am doing this is learning and growth not to impress anybody, so I will press on. The goal is to learn and have fun.

Take care,

Budzo

That's way more complicated than anything I'm doing. :) I'm just an event, a stick and a ball of yarn. :D

This doesn't seem like a bad idea at all. In fact it's got me thinking maybe we need a new concept of "deadline"... ;)

Here's what I propose (off the top of my head here):
The 20th is the start of the 'entry' window for the designs and the 23rd is the end. Any time during those four days, you make your design available to the others.
The window for the tutorials starts a week later - the 27th.
Now here's the deal - you can't play anyone else's design until your is turned in* (scout's honor) and you won't receive any reviews until your tutorials are turned in...

Just a thought, feel free to like it or hate it.

* - unless for some reason you can't finish, but you'll have to plead your case to the other contestants (who may be full of holiday cheer and thus lenient...)

A screenshot does not a design make. ;)

Dinonykos and I have done a lot of art for DC. As has Uatu (wherever he is).
We've been with DC a long time, too.
Don't be disheartened by our eye candy. ;) Instead, realize that with 9 or 10 years (the time I've been using DC) you will be able to do much better work than I do. :D

This is not even mentioning that no matter how good the art is, a design without a good story and a well executed code (the events) isn't going to be worth playing.

Hate it. :firedevil:

Well, the last point. Because actually at this point I'm not really planning to write a tutorial since there's nothing much to write about that hasn't been covered yet. On the other hand, I don't mind getting no reviews as long as I get to play the other entries, he he.

Since there was some information that was discussed on the boards but hard to find again I could imagine writing a tutorial about these things, e.g. all the possibilities of text layout, what you can do with sounds etc. So a tutorial that doesn't contain anything a designer couldn't find by browsing the various DC sites and forums, but hopefully a little more demonstartive (and with pictures for people who don't like to read :biglaugh: ). No promises yet but I think that would be more useful than me writing about the same stuff as the other contestants, seeing how uninventive my trap and secret door are (I don't like traps and secret doors much anyway :P ).

The other points are fine by me. As for me, moving the deadline by a few days doesn't help me in the least, but hopefully the other entries will be more fun to play then. :)
