Re: WOW?
You mean one of the famous "cursed scrolls" of Thieve's Run? :D
There are actually a bunch of items in the database that don't work yet, b/c we don't have all of the special abilities working/working properly. |
Re: WOW?
Hmm - well, I guess I just want to make some events for thieves to make them useful :D Maybe there are variables to grab those skill numbers?
For example, we could have: 1. Random trap events (imagine a level of random wandering kobolds, who like to set up traps and such to kill wandering PCs). 2. Treasure chest events (after a battle with monsters) Not sure what to do with hiding in shadows/move silently/climb walls skills - since they are useless if the rest of the party is with the thief. For the latter, I can only think of treasure that is left in a high nook or something - then you can try to climb to get it, I guess. |
Re: WOW?
For the move silently check, it could be a who tries where it is the objective of the thief to get behind a guard without an alarm going off. Some of it would need to be explained in text events - but could be quite plausible.
|
Re: WOW?
Hmm - that is a good idea. In any case, it will have to be encapsulated in an event somehow.

Re: WOW?
It's too bad, and kind of ironic that mroe development is going on with FRUA than with DC, but one of the guys over there has added several new events to the FRUA line-up, including one that allows for single combat. (I forget what the other events are that he has done, but I think there three total).
FRUA has also seen the addition of even more special abilities...plus they have the OAUA world hack with completely new graphics, classes, races, fonts, spells, monsters, you-name-it, to make FRUA into the 1e Oriental Adventures. It looks very cool, stylistically speaking, b/c 99% of the art has been done by one guy, hans, who can do so much with so few pixels and colors. :D |
Re: WOW?
Doh! We can't lose to THEM, c'mon, we have got to get DC running and into 1.0+ territory!
Once that happens, we can hack into DC ourselves and make several versions to match them: 1. Oriental Adventures (I can do OA-themed graphics) 2. Dragonlance (should be fun, too) 3. 2e Forgotten Realms So, for, uh, a reference to see how the FRUA OA thing is going, any screenshots? :D |
Re: WOW?
The OAUA worldhack is available for download through Rosedragon archive. The guys working on it have even updated it with bug fixes a couple of times. They even did an OAUA manual...
I know it's a hack of FRUA, but it's higher quality than FRUA and more complete. |
Re: WOW?
Hmm - any screenshots of it first? (I haven't even installed FRUA itself...)
|
Re: WOW?
If you look in either UANL 37 or 38, they have lots of screenshots.
I'm not trying to blow you off, I just don't have it installed (it's saved in a nice zip). And if I were to take the time to install I would get distracted for a couple of days...which is not bad in itself, but I want to do DC stuff. :D |
Re: WOW?
No problem, I will look for it! :)
|
Re: WOW?
It's UANL #36, with some updates (I don't know about screenshots) in #38.
It's pretty cool stuff. :D It makes me want to play it, and then see what I can do in DC. :) |
Re: WOW?
WOW! That is a very, very nice hack - very well done! Lots of work done into lots of icons, backdrops, walls, combat sets, etc....
However, I, being the anal retentive that I am, would have done a few things differently... 1. The Chinese hu-hsien and Vietnamese con-tinh look Japanese; I would have added more non-Japanese influences. 2. The monks should not be wearing karate uniforms; the sohei also had a particular look (and were armed with polearms); I think I would have done the yakuza differently, too, but.... 3. As you have read from my blog already, I have problems with Oriental Adventures itself :D Thus, I guess I would not be the best person to do an "as-is" OA hack for DC as I would be complaining about this and that along the way. :) I.e., I don't like the Oriental dragons that much, many of the classes seem redundant to me (bushi, samurai, yakuza), etc. and everything has too much of a Japanese slant. Still, this all makes me want to do some OA-related art :D Looks like great stuff that Hans did, overall! Also - the gargantua monster seems to look quite similar to Cthulhu - instant OA icon! :D Plus, yours is more "to-scale," since DC does not have FRUA's 2 x 2 restriction... |
Re: WOW?
Also, were there any other hacks for FRUA? Seems strange that noone would do a Dragonlance one...
|
Re: WOW?
The worldhacks for FRUA are OAUA (obviously), SFUA (sci-fi, and I don't know if it was ever released or finished), SHUA (super hero) WWUA (Wild West, I know all the art was completed and some of the tiems...) and and underdark hack that had all of the art done, but I don't know if anything else was finished.
I'm surprised that there is no Dragonlance hack as well. I bet if you suggested it over there and talked it up, you could get Mr. O'Donnell on board. He is the hackmeister who added the five new events to FRUA/OAUA. If only he would switch over to DC...we'd be done by the new year, or next summer at the latest. (He's very prolific, almost as prolific as he is sarcastic.) |
Re: WOW?
When we get around to doing that Asian-inspired hack for DC, we can do whatever we want. :) It can be multi-cultural, or uni-cultural. :)
|
Re: WOW?
Sarcastic is good, if it comes with prolificness :D
But yeah, I think for DC we could just go and include EVERYTHING we want perhaps. (There is no reason why kensei cannot fight alongside paladins and Solamnic knights :) ) Perhaps we can have a checkbox or something to include/remove class/race types in our various games someday. |
Re: WOW?
Ah, someday. :) My favorite part of DC.
That sounds good to me. I would love to ba able to have a setting where you could choose from 30 different classes, not counting multi-class and play one of 25 different races. :D |
Re: WOW?
Exactly! Could sort of have a feeling of one of those rogue-likes, except with actual graphics and stuff :)
|
Re: WOW?
There are some rogue "front-ends" out there that have some pretty nice isometric graphics. There was one I was following for a while that was using DC monsters. :) (That was a couple years ago.) There is another similar game that is called Net-hack. That has some nice isometric front-ends as well. :)
They get pretty boring, pretty quick. Actually, I felt the same way about Diablo. :D (I hope Blizzard doesn't send a hitman after me now.) |
Re: WOW?
Hey, if there is one using DC monsters out there, there are a lot more DC monsters now... :D Which one was that one?
But yeah, those Rogue-likes get really boring (or annoying) really fast - I hate how death is saved and permanent (I am just a hobby gamer, I don't want gaming to be my life!)... I never played Diablo, actually... |
Re: WOW?
Diablo was fun, for a while, but it's a lttle light on the story line and heavy on the, uh, killing line. :)
