Here you imply that using anything other than IE is a security risk.

Many online virus scanners won't work with FireFox which can be a problem if it is a last resort because a virus locked you out of your own programs (hapopend to me last year and that's why I dumped FF). I found that IE7 has everything FF has and is more compatible. If you do get FF I would always keep IE somewhere just in case. Don't make it your default browser either.
There's a simple solution to that. Use Firefox for your regular browsing, and use IE exclusively for your bank's website and that one outdated online shop. It's not like you can get rid of IE from your computer anyway.

There's also a plugin that let you load IE page in Firefox, so if a website doesn't accept firefox, just press the "open up as IE" button and you've got your IE-only page working in Firefox.

And why not make Firefox your default browser. There are no reasons not to.

Dammit! These flames aren't hot enough!

So here's some more coal. :D

From a Bit-Tech article:
Internet Explorer 7 was only released yesterday to the masses, and already there are complaints of security holes. "Of course," you say...what new piece of software doesn't have a few new bugs in it? Well, new bugs would be fine and dandy - but how about some that are at least two versions old?

Exploit tracking and security firm Secunia has reported that the same mhtml: redirect bug that has existed since IE5.5 is still alive and well in IE7, and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere quickly. The scam uses an html email to direct the target to a secure site (like a bank) in order to obtain password information.

Personally, that won't stop me from using IE7. Security is something I couldn't care less about in a browser. I don't do online banking, don't care who knows whatever they want to about my personal data or computer usage. And I doubt there is anyone who cares enough to go to that much effort for my info. The chances of anything happening to me (given that I do have a reasonable level of non-netstupidity) are small enough that I don't care.

But I use Firefox because of the tabs, which IE didn't have until version 7, and the themes and extensions.

I couldn't stand it anymore so I clicked on the thread.

Yes, Firefox is better. IE is a bunch a, I can't say what 'cos I'm a good Christian. I have to use that junk all day at work.

Now y'all can go back to whatever y'all were talkin' 'bout.

Basically, none of them are perfect. I have IE7, Firefox and Opera. There are sites where one or the other of them makes the page look funny, or even unusable.

In terms of look, I like the sleek IE7 look most, but the problem is this look is ruined if you have even one custom button (eg del.icio.us) as it appears in a bar all by itself. Opera has a very good look as well.

In terms of speed, Firefox is probably quickest for mine. IE7 seems to be a bit slower, and even more so if you turn on the anti-phishing functionality. And Opera just seems slower again.

I like the way Opera has the "Top 10" tab which appears whenever you click the URL bar, which shows you the 10 most frequent links that you've accessed. The way Opera's bookmarks are listed are horrible however. The space between lines is so tiny that the mouse cursor often loses its place when you're drilling down levels.

In short, none of them are perfect.

Safari is!

I have the Opera installer sitting on my desktop for ages, and I'm waiting until they make a firefox to opera bookmarks importer before giving it a try. I have more than 200 bookmarks, no way I'll do it manually.

Sir Krustin 10-21-2006 07:45 AM

Just find out what file has the bookmarks in Opera and copy/paste.

I do it all the time - it's easier to parse large blocks of bookmarks that way than use the built-in editor.

Wow!!!
I did not realize that this would turn into such a spirited discussion! ( I would hate to see if I asked if Linux was better that mac / windows HA HA I would hate to put out those flames). Thanks for all the information / comments. I think I'll try using both for while just to see the difference ( I just noticed on google news that there is some big security flaw on the new IE7 release).
Can you transfer your favorites / bookmarks from IE to Firefox?

Callum 10-21-2006 01:35 PM

Yes, the first time you open Firefox, it will ask if you want to, or you can import them at another time through the bookmark manager. (Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks, File > Import)

toot033 10-21-2006 06:24 PM

Can you copy them to firefox instea of importing them. I would hate to have to copy them back and forth if I decide to use both of them.

The import function does a copy of them.

That's Felix, I'm gonna set up the Firefox security as shown in the link; in the morning; I'm too tired!

Harkoliar 10-21-2006 10:46 PM

nice link though

Memnoch 10-22-2006 12:23 AM

Speaking of Firefox, is the www.cnet.com page coming up ok for Firefox users? I'm coming up with some graphical errors on the page:

It renders perfectly for me.
