I never claimed nor sought equality with God, and he's talking about something totally different.

Also, water at room temperature is much better for you than ice cold water.

Red wine should be drunk at room temperature too. Jesus drank wine (since you're into biblical justification. Odd seeing as you're an athiest..... ;) )

Just remember you chose this analogy.

Responding to several people at once here!!

SC - how are you? I've been about, but you know how things are, I swing between 20 posts a week and 20 posts an hour ;) What with all the antiwar activities I am doing (oh god, the endless meetings I have been going to)!! I'm going to add that motto to my sig too, good idea ;)

Cloudy - you are so sweet to say that, thank you so much, but I know I am no angel.

Ziroc - That's good, thanks for clarifying. Life without sarcasm - Mmmm, I couldn't get through the day!

Seems to be now the view is sarcasm is ok as long as not directed at people. But what I said that started all this fuss *wasn't* directed at Hiram personally!! Goddamn it, I like Hiram! We've interacted on AIM and I think he's a lovely guy.....

SC, I will try to explain as I can see it does really upset you.

This may be one of those cases where it would have been the better course to not have made the wisecrack at all. It did effect him personally and I understand you know a bit about his family and his sister so this should make sense.

What you may not have even thought about when making the sarcastic remark about the poor (and the system) in America is that they have been struggling for a while to find ways to pay those medical bills and I suspect your comment came across as a huge slap in his face.

His first post on the War forum clearly stated he'd not done so before and it wasn't his usual type of post. I'd see that as a red flag.. calling for caution in any 'heated' debate since one couldn't know how he'd deal with it! Sure you can trade barbs with Ronn or others because you DO know how they react under fire. But it's that type of thread that keeps people like Hiram from posting and when they do venture into the shark-infested waters they don't usually come with a stun gun in hand. So maybe the answer for everyone is to treat those whose tolerance for stinging comments is unknown with extra respect to begin with.

Errrrmmm..... Ziroc..... er... most sarcasm is directed towards someone or what someone said.....
If both parties are amicable it doesn't really matter much.... seems to me it is only bad when there is animosity between the posters and the sarcasm is deliberately nasty.
Gosh - its a minefield, isn't it? And SO difficult to be a Mod, because you need to read a lot of stuff that just doesn't interest you to see if it is friendly or not...... I would hate the job!

Could you appoint some more Mods just for this forum so that too much doesn't rest on Memnoch and you? I think he is feeling very pressured at the moment. Most other forums have 3 or 4 Mods, this one only has 2, and it is the hardest to look after.

I hope you don't take it down, though. It would mean a lot of stuff would just get posted in GD and the idea of this one was to keep it out of there..... I KNOW it isn't easy for you, and this is a great forum due to you and your excellent Moderators. I do feel, though, that more Mods in here would help matters and take the pressure off the two of you. You really need someone else in Australia or the East....

I for one gathered that.

The post of mine that Saz chastised me for was totally sarcastic.

It is the same post brought up frequently by those now anti-no sarcasm.

It would seem on one hand you are agreed with, yet on the other disagreed with, for exactly the same policy, by the same people.....

Most odd.

I think you and the place rocks Dan, and think as ever you're doing a great job.

If it makes it easier for you I'll gladly voluntarily buzz off, even for a while - as I love the place too much to see it descend into squabbles because of percieved injustices.

However, I love contributing here, and until I hear otherwise, will post till the cows come home.

Cloudy, it was *not* a sarcastic remark about the poor. It was totally a sarcastic remark about the system, which it sounds like Hiram's family has come up against.

I think the point you make here is very valid, thanks for bringing it up. It hadn't occured to me, for the simple reason that in Britain there would have been no medical bills to pay, as care would have been given under the National Health System.

Ok, I think we just have to agree that it was a major misunderstanding and some people took it differently than you may have intended.

Yes, there are a lot of diverse cultures and individual experiences to deal with on IW. This case is a perfect example of what I said earlier, we don't KNOW how another will take those zinger comments and sometimes it's just better to haul out the milk and cookies before you test the jalapenos. ;)

SC, I really hope you understand that my comments were genuinely meant to make things better for all posters here at IW, yourself included. (and not in a patronising way!) I am sorry you had the misunderstanding with Hiram. I'm sure it's been stressful for you and I hope he comes back or answers his mails soon.

Ziroc trust me I know both NWM and Aradia Well and they are 2 seperate people it happened at CRC two users in two seperate locations would get the same IP its what happens sometimes with Dial up access (or when users use public terminals and such).

I think you now owe Aradia, A FEMALe for starters (uhh trust me on this ive spoken to her on the Phone before too) an apology at the least.

Oh and Cloudy no need to welcome me as a newcomer ive been here under this name and before that Fonzie Forum Tyrant of MH for quite some time now even posted a few.

Koth, please realize that we have had a lot of problems with people coming here and posting under more than one account under false pretenses. Not that I don't trust you, you know I do - but we have to make our decisions based on the facts that are available to us, hard-to-believe as they may seem.

Well excuse me whilst I burst into tears here. The richest country in the world has citizens in need - poor education poor medical treatment and crap food?

There's plenty of money around, much of it in the pockets of people like Bill Gates, and the many many others who make unfeasibly large amounts of money whilst others are starving. Your country doesn't believe in state provided services, and proper safety nets for those in need. What you describe is the consequence of that.

When taxes continue to be lowered whilst people are in dire need, and essential services are provided by private contractors - that's what you get. It's all about priorities. Under Tony Blair, Britain continues down the road that the US has already taken. Blair is finishing what Thatcher started, the privitisation of Britain

You make good points Silver Cheetah, all of which I agree with, but the point that Memnoch and others are trying to make is in the delivery. If you were to omit the first paragraph would this strengthen or weaken your argument? I think it would be the latter. Likewise asking 'is this a discussion forum or a nursery school?' doesn't help your cause.

I think what Memnoch wants to remove from the forum is 'incivility' rather than sarcasm. I have seen people being uncivil to each other on this forum, but this has been a two way street. Sometimes this can take the form of an opening sentence like yours or something like 'You must be joking, right?'

When Yorick posted his Brits thread I didn't get over excited. It was obviously complete and utter twaddle.

I will give two examples of posts that I felt to be uncivil.
Originally posted by Yorick in reply to a thread by tracey in which she misspelt the word 'Propaganda':

People, this is a post of such ignorant, paranoid delusion I cannot express enough the importance of disregarding it.

There is no such thing as "propogander" either BTW. ;) Try "Propaganda" for size.
[/QUOTE}

Then,in response to a semi-joking post about the reception that the Australian fotballers got in Uruguay, Silver Cheetah for some reason brought up the subject of gun control in the US, suggesting that Yorick lived there. When Yorick said that he would not be returning to the US before Christmas SC's reply was:

'Amidst all her ills, America at last has something to smile about! '

I thought this was uncivil (although, forgive me Hugh it made me laugh.) If Yorick had seen the joke he may have taken umbrage, if I had said it (I hope) he would have laughed it off.

No-one is suggesting that people on this forum should not post their opinions and if sarcasm isn't allowed then there is little point in me posting on IW

Just my two euros. ;)

BTW if you want to see real sarcasm look here:

I replied to your rather unsubtle bit of sarcasm in that link you provided by the way. Speaking of which, did you have a good time at the pub watching Fulham flog the Spurs? Oh, pardon me...I didn't realize they'd won. :D

Very funny Donut. Glad to see the lighter side of things as usual. ;) I should leap to my defense though and point out two things though.

1."People, this is a post of such ignorant, paranoid delusion I cannot express enough the importance of disregarding it.

The statement is towards the post, not the person. It was in the context of a postal presentation of an alternate perception of current affairs.

Similarly this:
"There is no such thing as "propogander" either BTW. ;) Try "Propaganda" for size." emphasised the misunderstanding of the word propaganda, used postwardly in an incorrect fashion. I included a definition for clarity as well.

2.Cheetah's jocular jibe was of a personal nature. Suggesting America was better without me in it. :( Not very nice. :(

Anyhow, whatever...... I for one shall heed the call to be less sarcasticaly attacking in my posts henceforth.

-----------------------------------

Well, the way I see it!

*Ducks thrown tomato*

There are entirely too many thin-skins who like to complain to the teacher when another kid sticks their tongue out at them.

I FULLY understand that the mods don't want to muck through a bunch of G.S.W. (Gripe, Snivel, Whine) mail every day! They shouldn't have to. The only thing they should need to get involved with is the obscene, the illegal, and board vandals. I personally think it's too late to save this particular board. The tight regulation it requires is going to squeeze the very life from it. If people are already dogging the mods with complaints of someone being sarcastic, and sarcasm is going to be frowned upon, I hear the death rattle coming.
Killed by drowning in a deluge of complaints.

Liliara 12-02-2001 05:20 AM

Wow, first night back on the war forum in a while, haven't been through the first page of catch-up and I'm already getting a tic! LOL! Just wanted to make a couple of statements:

I love all out rough and tumble debate. I can give as well as receive, and I have been guilty on more than one occasion of being too harsh. The reason that I left the War Forum for a while was not because of restrictions or thin skin. It was out of respect for Ziroc and the Mods who make this place possible. I admit, I have questioned the authorities before ::sends a wink Memnoch's way:: but I came to the conclusion eventually that all of the enjoyment that I have found on this board is due to them! Therefor, I decided to take a break and gather my priorities before coming back onto this forum and biting the hands that feed by doing what they have asked the members not to do. It doesn't mean I won't mess up in the future, but I will never try to purposefully disrespect Ziroc (who deserves our utmost thanks) or any of those that he has deemed fit to be in charge. (In other words, I wanted to respect IW as I would another's home. If you were to visit someone, would you stand and argue with them if they asked you to remove your shoes before walking on their carpet)

My other statement is about Yorick. I cannot understand how anyone could have ANYTHING bad to say about him. Sure he slips sometimes (as do we all) and I don't always agree with what he has to say, but I sometimes wonder if it is the intelligence in wich he says things that upset some people. Yorick is one of the easiest people on this board to get along with. Quick to forgive others, easygoing, and undeserving of the negative feelings that I have been picking up while catching up on the current events of IW. I feel as though I am in high school all over again, where people get insecure over popularity issues.

Ziroc, Thank you for IW

Mods, thank you for having Ziroc's back and devoting so much time to our ungrateful butts

Hugh, Hang in there, friend. It's probably just a wave. :D But I'm sure you know this.

Amanda
