Ok, before the speculation starts flying (which it already appears to be doing), let me make a few things clear about what I meant:

A) I was in no way referring to the serious discussion threads, which I am pleased are being conducted as well as they are...keep up the great work there.

B) I'm not calling for *forced nicety*...that makes me want to choke and puke as well. I *am* calling for a general atmosphere of respect, though, which a few of our members seem to be lacking in. Not many, thank goodness, but a few.

What IS irritating me, and why I made this post to begin with, is that there are a few members who have decided to take on a pseudo-moderator stance and lecture others about petty *infractions*, some of which is ridiculous. It is high-handed, officious, and downright rude. Like "Excuse me, but who died and made you Mod?" ;)

Now, I know that the IW of 2002 is not the IW of 2001. Maybe that's for the best. It would be terrible if everything stagnated. Forums need to be dynamic and move with the times...but that does not call for a general tossing down of mutual respect for others.

And, on the other side of the coin, as Nachtrafe so well pointed out, yes, people are WAAAY too whiny and oversensitive, especially lately. One of my favorite mottos is, <font color="#ffffff">"Don't run with the big dogs if you're going to piddle like a puppy."</font> That is to say, if you find yourself in a thread that's offending you,

A) take your mouse,
B) point to your "Back" button
C) and CLICK it!

because THAT'S what it's there for!

You certainly don't have to be in nodding agreement with everyone here. But you do have to show them the same level of respect that you expect them to show you as a public forum participant. And if that means shutting your piehole instead of saying something whiny, undercutting, or demeaning, then by all means, keep your peace. Believe me, we have "something for everyone" here, and not all threads are for everyone. Be constructive, not destructive.

Ok, hope this clears things up.

Very good Saz, and people, PEACE! Relax.... etc..

And as for the pseudo-mod stance people were taking, perhaps they take it because they feel the mods are not doing their job? Is this true? No offence to the current mods, just idle speculation about the motivation of wannabe-mods.

Everybody on here knows that the Moderators of Gen. Con. do their "jobs" with great skill and are fast on action. Heck, I was policing the RPG forum so tightly and strictly that I was told to loosen up and let a few things slip! Can you believe that? Anyway...I have a theory or two about the mini-mod factor.

1. It institutes a reason to post.
2. It gives the appearance of being supportive to the Administration.
3. Spam in disguise.
4. Wants to have authority.
5. Likes telling people where to go and what to do.
6. The "pack of dogs" factor. (Ever see one little dog, who is afraid of everything...but when that dog joins the neighborhood dogs and they team up in a pack, even domestic, cowardly dogs get extremely aggresive.)

NO, these tend to be young folk who seem to feel they need to 'lord it over' their peers.. which I believe is all well and good, but as Ziroc pointed out at one time, they are not sanctioned to do so by him and he is the webmaster. So no 'moderator' title, no acting as if you are one. Simple, really.

FWIW, I have not hear that complaint here at IW. Z chose well and on GD, Sazerac, Memnoch and Ertai do their jobs beyond adequately, thank you very much. They cover alot of threads and do it well!

Hiya,

Hmm, someone mentioned that new members tend to act up a bit, but to be honest, I've seen this more with people who have been around for a while. This is both on and off the forum though, the way I've seen some people act is pretty strange, though I know we all have our moments at times.

IW definately has a very unique atmosphere, to my mind. I personally think that there are some of the older members of the board who take offence to some of the newer ones presence occasionally. What I mostly mean is that people who have been here a while get to know what they can say and what they can't. I have lost count of the amount of times where I have had second thoughts about posting my opinion, and I know others (from all over the spectrum) have done so to. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but I think it explains your idea Scronan. The people who have been here for ages tend to dictate what is acceptable. I have no major problem with that as it keeps the board calm, but it is interesting to note. And I will also say that this is not attacking any people, I do not consider this a bad thing. Just worthy of note, that is all.

Hi Barry,

Well, I understand what you have said and that makes sense as to what I've mostly seen here, but I have seen some senior members act up and it totally surprised me that what they did was tolerated.

Being very honest here, I can play the devil's advocate and say that yes a new person may act up if they don't know the rules, but conversely they may be on the extra polite side since they are trying to fit in.

And the other side of the coin is, a more senior member may tend to act out of character and this may be tolerated since they are well known and respected on the board.

So I think the moral is, new folks and old folks alike, we all need to remind ourselves to keep things in check now and then.

I have to disagree with you here Davros and LoA. Trust you to be rude on a 'Too much rudeness thread'.

ʆë®Ñï†Ý is posting in a style that many kids use today. It is far easier than using correct grammar, syntax and spelling. You too are just getting old and intolerant. At the very least you should thank her for posting in a form which makes her posts easy to spot and easier to ignore.

I will readily admit I assumed what is being dubbed a 'psuedo-mod hat' once in a thread recently with another member whom I felt might be edging a little too close to the boundary of debate vs. flame....and I was also on AIM with him at the time and so told him I did it. My justification was, right or wrong, better me (or anyone else) to try to draw back the reins than the mods to have to start issuing warnings (or other chastisement). They (the mods) are frantically busy already--and shouldn't we all try to 'be there' good or bad for our friends? Do any of you sit on your hands if it looks like a friend might be getting a little carried away?

If this was offensive to others or against the rules and regs, my apologies. I do not make a habit of it, but at the same time, I would hope another would do the same for me.

Hmm you're right I've never seen that style used in text messages and I've been sending/receiving them for a few years now. Oh well, I don't find Eternity's style hard to follow at all, I think the little emotion/action indicators add character.

Methinks the latter, in which case I would have it noted that you have at last been caught you in a syntactical slip-up.

I don't think what you did was wrong at all, and neither do the mods I think. They do welcome any help in monitoring this huge forum. I think that what they object to is when people assume higher moral ground, reprimanding people and being generally unpleasant and pedantic about it.
I cannot speak for the mods of course, but I think they would welcome it if you remind people in a heated debate to be polite, in a friendly, non-patronising manner of course.

Thanks, Melusine. I hadn't noticed any of the mods coming for me, so I assumed (hoped!) I hadn't overstepped *my* bounds!

HOWEVER, I am maintaining a steady supply of wet noodles for any beatings which might need administerating..... ;)

I own three cellphones and never turn the darned things on. I always delegate the thing to my stepson, who has installed custom ring, etc. How annoying to hear Fur Elise when all it is really saying is, "Somebody wants to talk to you, no mattter what you are doing." My crusty husband always says, and I agree, that he wants to be less available, not more. But, I say, let 'Eternity' use whatever style she likes.

Heh, I don't see why anyone would have a problem with Eternity's posting style, personally I like it, not as dry as some of the others

Let us youngsters have our fun
