OK, I LOVE this idea...

So, RudeDawag, the mad-scientist Ranger is going to polymorph a full-sized, pissed off Minotaur. Sharpen up the horns, give him a battle axe... Strap a pack of Fire potions to his back...

After preparing the Minotaur, we slap him around a bit (just to get him angrier) SMACK !

Set off the catapult, and check the results *scribbling furiously in notepad*

OK, the size of the squirrel gets good distance, but just above average. B+
The squirrl's tail allows him to "steer" in the air, giving great accuracy. (+4 to hit) A+
Surprise attack. "Hey, look at the squirrel flying at us, AAAAUUUUGGGHHH" A+
Overall damamge. *rubbing hands together in glee* The base damage for the full-sized Minotaur is 3d12. Adding in the "pissed-off" factor (+5) and the strength bonus of the Minotaur (+5) we get a base of 3d12+10 !!! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/noncgi/smiles/wow.gif 46 possible, with a factor of 3 if a Critical hit is a possible 138 !!!! And that's before he starts swinging the axe, and the added fire damage (Note, the pack should tear open when the Minotaur polymorphs back into his natural state...)

Nice expansion on the on the polymorph idea.

To add a further twist, adjust the catapult so that the Minotaur (in Squirrel form) skips off of the ground two or three time before reaching the target. This should drastically add to his rage!! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no.../angryfire.gif

ehhh,,I still like the traditinal Dwarf,Halfling and Gnomes..

Lets say we can fit what?...5 dwarfs in a huge catapult..With platemail,,it might take some distance away but thats what the halflings are for,and I will get to them later..Now back to the Dwarfs,,ok a PlateMail dwarf in a 'Advanced Catapult,Edition 1' built by the gnomes,,if we use the drunken factor posted by onthepequod, the will fly an average,130 ft. doing an average 2d10 +3 the paltemail,+3 the anger that can be a possible 26 damge, a critacal x2 can be 52 damge each, thats one round of pissed off platemailed dwarf can do at highest 260.And you will be able to get far more dwarfs then minatours..and by Elmister..thats just dwarfs!!

Lets go to halflings

Now using my sling shot plan,We can fit prolbey 2 halflings each in a single giant sling shot, now, they can go on average an amazing 210 ft! Each halfling (dressed in chainmail) can do 2d6 damge, not much, thats thats 24 possible damge,a crictacal x2,thats 48 damage.AANNDD,,if we put SHort Swords on the halflings, thatd what,1d6 damge per sword?A possible 60 damge pershot..a critacal x2 120 damge at highest,,per shot!!

Ok so we shoot the halflings first for distance..then as we see the enemy get closer, let the bearded migets fly,,by the time the enemy get close to you,,if any survive,,they will have very very little hp...

any agurments?

Again, with Halflings as with Minotaurs, adjusting the catapult so that they skip off of the ground a few times before reaching the target has merit that should be taken into account. Consider:
1) The “Increased Rage Factor” which provides a hastening like effect on the Halflings when they finally come to a stop.
2) The fact the it is easier to defend yourself from objects falling from the sky than to try and dodge objects whose trajectory changes with each skip.

Time to test the theories!

Give the nature of the test, the participants (ammo), the target, and any special circumstances. (ie, fire, poison gasses, etc) We need figures, dammit !

Sorry, guys. Got busy in RL...

RudeDawg steps to the lecturn, and consults his notes...

The results of the "Siege Assault Test v1.1" are as follows:

Premise:
As we all know, military operations are varied. The simplest breakdown of martial arts is : Personal versus Group assault, ie man to man, or army to army. This test concentrates on tactics for Group Assault.

Tactics are a complex idea. Obviously, sending in a battalian of heavy cavalry against a small group of foot-soldiers will prove an easy victory, bui it is an expensive one. When an army must move over large distances, and lay siege to an encamped force, the wise commander will take into account the nature of supply lines, military movement, exhaustion, and force strength versus the army's cost (in both resources, and men). Therefore, it is important to find the best combination of resources to cause the maximum strategic damage, at the minimum cost to the army.

Our goal is to prove that the catapult launched "small warrior", in it's various forms, is an effective, and efficient alternative to the more traditional siege strategies.

The Experiment Setup:
The defender was behind a high wall surrounding the village. They had supplies (food and water) to last one week, and weapons for their guard force. Our research leader, RudeDawg, assured the experimenters that the village had vollunteered their help to further science. And they owed him money.

The first point in favor of the tactics is that the missles are already a part of the invading force. They are self-mobile, and can even carry supplies. The gnomes, henceforth referred to as "Exploding Missles of Doom", proved valuable as engineers. Dwarves, with their exceptional strength, are perfectly capable of manual labor. They could carry several times their weight, and are wonderful at digging tunnels beneath the enemy. They will be refered to "Ass-kicking Drunk Battle-Rangers" for our purposes. Halfling proved to be useless in the preparations, and will be called "Cannon Fodder, Expendable and Good Riddance".

For the experiment, one catapult was set up. The range was set for 75 yards, and the angle of fire was set for 30 degrees from horizontal. The catapult could easily throw stones weighing 200 pounds that distance.

The breakdown was simple. Drwarves, though short, are very compact and strong. They weigh nearly as much as humans, the average for a fully armed and armored BattleRager was 175 to 200 pounds. Gnomes are nearly as tall as dwarves, but have nowhere NEAR the muscle mass, or strength. Average gnomes weigh between 40 to 45 pounds, but when wearing metal armor, lose their mobility. For the experiment, they were given leather armor, short swords, and their experimental potions. We were able to launch 4 gnomes from the catapult. Halflings proved to be totally useless. The average weight of them was 30 to 35 pounds. We chose not to armor, or arm them, but we were able to beat them senseless and force-fit 7 of them into the catapult-cup. when doused in oil, and set afire, they prove to be a funy distraction when launched at the enemy.

Missle preparation was essential. The Dwarf was force-fed alcohol (We told him it was a drinking game) until he was nearly catatonic. We placed him in the catapult, and , as he was launched, we threw water in his face. He awoke in mid-air, and started his battle-cries while in flight. The damage to the enemy was massive.

The gnomes were easily lured into the catapult by placing turnips in it. After launch, a flaming arrows was shot at their packs, igniting the potions. After landing, the explosions were cool.

The halflings were shot into the air, and picked off by our own archers.

Results
This may not work in a real military situation, but it sure was funny.

RudeDawg leaves the podium. The floor is now open for questions.

In honor of Moni and CloudSparkle, the following tactic is being mentioned. It is due to the inspiration these two provided that we may enjoy the benefit of the following weapon. A weapon so devistating that it is sure to bring peace as long as it remains in the right hands.

However, a significant departure from mainstream Dwarf/Gnome/Halfing Throwing is necessary. This tactic requires two stout male Dwarves and one female Elf with big eyes, long lashes, and slightly pouty lips. That's right an elf. Neah, you say. Humph, you say. It can't be done, you say. Well allow me to ellucidate and then you be the judge.

All three are to be loaded into the catapult with the Dwarves on the bottom so as to make the Elf as comfortable as possible. The Dwarves must be completely bereft of any exposed body hair for they must pass the elf in the air in order to ensure a safe and soft landing (by whatever means necessary). Once the Elf has landed she must bat her eyelashes and push out a pouty lower lip. The outcome is inescapable. The enemy will fall all over themselves to do her bidding, even to the point of doing themselves harm http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/fight.gif. The effect greatly exceeds that of mental domination. However, if this does not persuade you, the Elf can also show a little leg http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/noncgi/smiles/wow.gif, which will cause the enemy to spontaniously combust http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no.../angryfire.gif. Anything more than a little leg would jeopardize the safety of the Elf (to heck with the Dwarves), since she may take shrapnel from the enemy outright exploding .

Hey, what about Kenders? Throw a half dozen of 'em over to the enemies, they borrow all the weapons, make it easier for the flaming dwarves to come. Kinda like a first wave assault tactic. Oh, and what kind of catapult? I suggest using a three seater bow. Gives you plenty of torque for distance, smaller, easier to move, and just plain cool. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/noncgi/smiles/338.gif Comes complete with capes and goggles for the vertically challenged ones (and minotaurs). http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif\

Hmmm…..I know that laugh (onthepequod thinks to himself). It can be none other that that devious diabolical Dwarf, Kors. What a dastardly downright devious deed that Dwarf pulled. But I can’t let Kors know I am thinking this. After all, Kors is the hero of Trademeet.

"Ha! Ha! Kors you’re quite the card. Come now, stop frustrating the process and join in. You’ll find it quite enjoyable once you be come immersed" (thinking to himself “….in alcohol that is, ignited, and then launched”).

Sir_Tainly 05-11-2001 10:29 AM

Well I'm thinking we should be redesign out catapult to hurl greater loads, so more dwarves etc or a few minotaurs. By using a mix and match approach to our ammunition we could launch alternate waves for greater effect.

The way I propose to improve our catapult is to use an elephant or a mammoth, whichever is to hand as a counter balance. When the elephant jumps on one side of the cantilever, the otherside will be propelled upwards with far greater velocity. In order to avoid the elephant breaking the piece, I suggest we make it out of carbon fibre and titanium to give maximum strength at minimum weight (thus improving its mobility). Also I believe the cantilever should be teflon coated to minimise friction drag as the part moves through the air. Also I think we should add cupholders to the design as catapulting is thirsty work. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I think we've forgotten the importance of good headgear. I mean, we don't want our ammunition to fall head first and fall utterly unconscious so as to be completely ineffective.

To that end I suggest that we equip the ammo with helmets. Especially those fluffy ones (uh scratch that) those magnificent ones with wings on the sides of the head. The wings might actually improve flight stability.
