Technically yes, you can, but you have a better chance of simultaneously striking the lottery, have a beautiful girl/guy fall into your lap and have world peace.

Erm... considering the fact that one can use Wands (namely the Wands of Fodder & Cloudkill), Potions (for both offensive and defensive purposes!) and Quick Slot Items in these zones, i'm quite sure the chances are a bit higher.

With no means to lower their MR, most wands and potions are useless. And anybody who tells me that 5 Gnolls can take on what's in there is gonna get this smiley in reply...

Oh... did I mention that they can see through Invisibility?

Alson 03-24-2003 03:32 PM

5 Gnolls can take 5 at least punches. ;) And the Wand of Cloudkill is not to be overlooked. Stacking Clouds is a mighty tactic.

Besides... i think that if you're quick enough, you can actually cast something from a scroll. So you can do the boring-but-may-work "enter room, cast spell from a scroll, exit room, enter room, ..." routine.

On the other hand, Alson, entering the room, and letting yourself "go with the flow" has its charms as well.. it's always funny to see cows dropping from the heavens

Heh... actually, we're discussing Dead Magic zones, not Wild Magic ones. ;) But seeing cows dropping from the sky is fun, nevertheless! :D

Not really sure which dead-magic area you're talking about here, but couldn't a sorcerer simply prebuff with the right spells before going through the portal and act as a fighter? I'm sure Tenser's Transformation and Energy Blades goes a long way, and you could always step out when you run out of blades, no?

Watcher's Keep, TOB, has some zones where magic will become wild surges resulting in one of the MANY wild surge effects. Fun, but annoying.

pcgiant 03-24-2003 04:01 PM

IIRC, Dead magic zones remove buffs as well, including Energy Blades.

Leslie 03-24-2003 04:05 PM

There are some cheesy boots in the Tactics mod that prevent that.

Gangrell 03-24-2003 04:06 PM

The only dead magic zones I've ever been in are the ones on the Maze level in Watcher's Keep. Are there anymore in the game?

Rataxes 03-24-2003 04:06 PM

That's not been the case for me, at least HLA's and Innate abilities have in my experience remained even upon entering dead-magic zones.

Link 03-24-2003 04:11 PM

IIRC Dead Magic zones just don't allow you to cast any spells at all. Am I correct to say that?

Gangrell 03-24-2003 04:14 PM

Yea, I think so. Hence the name Dead Magic.

They also dispel magic - like Stoneskin ...
Unless you wear those boots I mentioned. ;)

</font>
Uh-huh, yeah I understand. That sounds fairly reasonable, as Stoneskin is something magical of course. It sounds reasonable too that Energy Blades or MMM wouldn't be dispelled though, because they are weapons. If everything magic wouldn't work you should only be able to use normal weapons in Dead Magic zones, which is a new challenge of course

SixOfSpades 03-25-2003 06:27 PM

Actually, as I check my map of the Portal Maze, both of the Dead-Magic zones and one of the Wild-Magic zones can be avoided entirely. Only a single Wild-Magic room absolutely MUST be visited.

Also, in addition to the tactics that work even in Dead-Magic zones (All Quick Items, most HLA's and Special Abilities, certain other cheesy tricks that are fun to find out on your own), you don't even have to spend more than a second in Dead- or Wild- rooms if you don't want to. Walk in, walk out.

Dundee Slaytern 03-25-2003 10:33 PM

That's what I do when I encounter them, run the heck out of the Dead-Magic Room.

Thorfinn 03-26-2003 12:39 AM

pcgiant, sorry if I didn't ask my question very clearly. I was wondering if it was possible to beat Tactics mod with a solo character without breaking the SoA XP cap.

pcgiant 03-26-2003 12:53 AM

Hmmm? Doesn't Elmonster play vanilla SoA until the end of SoA, then install ToB? I'm sure there is no experience cap remover, either. I thought Elmonster was at 2.9 million XP until the game of SoA. Am I wrong?

pcgiant 03-26-2003 12:54 AM

Oh, I misread. I'm not sure whether anyone has completed the game with the Tactics mod at the SoA cap. Sorry.

Thorfinn 03-26-2003 12:57 AM

You are correct. He cast no 9th level spells, consistent with 17th level, and his Lower Magic spells reduced MR by 27, consistent with 17th level. But I think that was without the Tactics mod.

[EDIT]
I guess I should have waited a minute or so before replying. ;)

I finally examined my actual map of the Portal Maze last night, and discovered I was wrong: To actually beat WK Level 3, you absolutely must visit the Tanar'ri Base--and there are only two ways into that room, and both of them are from Dead-Magic zones.

So, the bare minimum is 1 Dead Magic, 1 Wild Magic.
