Ancient rome had live gladiator battles to entertain the citizens. In some places bullfighting is still socially acceptable. And then there's reality TV. I think quite a few people would actually pay to see a monkey's head smashed open.

Many people (*cough* *cough) do seem to enjoy watching gory and bizarre footage. After all, why else would there be sites like www.rotten.com ? (not for the weak of stomach)
