It is still useful to have one mage (if you have more that one in your party) that specializes in darts, so that you can take advantage of the darts that you find - after all darts have 3 attacks/round, where as slings only have 1 attack /round.

Finally daggers: In the underdark you can buy a +3 throwing knife (returning) - with 2 attack/round it is much better than a sling.

But in the beginning the will need the sling the most.

You can find a +5 sling even with out the SE. There is also a +4. Been too long though. Can't remember where for the life of me.

The Sling of Everand is the only sling capable of hurling +5 enchanted bullets though. There is a +5 enchanted sling in ToB, but it only can hurl +4 enchanted bullets at best( which can be found in SoA and ToB, but the ones in SoA are relatively rare).

ADD] So technically, the Sling of Everand is not the best sling for a Mage, but it is the most practical( since it requires no bullets, but it deals pathetic damage). Another good sling is the Sling of Seeking +2, since it adds STR damage bonuses. If your STR is let us say, 19. This means an additional +7 damage purely from STR bonuses only.

If you want an extreme slinger, get an Archer, put 2** in Slings and equip him/her with the best STR girdle and give him/her the Sling of Seeking +2 and use +4 enchanted bullets.
