Since there were no bards left in the other 999 matches, they're forgotten.

On the other hand, suppose the bards won all fights but one. With that many dead ninja's, everyone will tell you they are rare, and hard to spot. Since they are in fact considered exotic by many in the west, you'll have to conclude this outcome is much more likely.

But no matter what sources you're looking at, from the above it's clear that it'll be the bard owning the ninja, end of story.

Am I the only one who noticed that as a bad joke? (The Italic Bit :D )

Depends on what kind of bard. Singer? Ninjas will rip them to shreds. BG2 bard? If the ninja manages to dodge/resist all the potent magic, then they have to cut through stoneskin, mirror image, etc. In other words, they're screwed.
