"You have to remember that an RPG is one where a person is allowed to take on the role of a character." wouldn't that mean that 99% of all available games currently qualify as roleplaying games? Duke Nuke 'em a roleplaying game? Well.. you do take on the role of an egocentric sociopath. Doom a roleplaying game? Hm.. don't you pick up the part of a brave space marine? I don't think the Diablo games qualify as roleplaying games any more then these ones.

Of course you assume the role of a character in about every video game, but the real factor here ares attributes. Only games with character attributes and experience are called rpgs.
To me, Diablo is an "action rpg" as are Icewind Dale, Deus Ex, Divine Divinity, Arx Fatalis, Might and Magic and any other rpg focused more on fighting and exporation than dialogs.
"Real" rpgs are games like Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Final Fantasy...
