Get a mini then. $200 for a 4GB, and not too much more probably for 6GB.

1500 songs is likely to be twice that size though...

I only have 1000 songs and they take up 6 GB.

But when you import them into Itunes and then into the IPOD they do get compressed if you have the apple format compression on.
