I think there usually would be intent behind a spammy post, i.e. 'this post will increase my overall post count'. This intent may be subconscious.
I think spamming can be when someone posts in a thread and doesn't contribute anything to the topic but instead comments on something irrelevant, like '[so and so], your signature is too big', or 'you've double posted' (which is ironically really a triple post because while mini-modding and 'saving' forum space by alerting the offender to their mistake, they're wasting as much space themselves  ) in a thread about how to get out stains or something. But it's not necessarily a post that doesn't contribute anything to the topic; like a spammer wouldn't just post 'dsf' on every thread. The post can address the topic but in a meaningless, trivial way, like for instance, in threads where people are paying respects to some singer or actor or someone that has died by discussing how they used to idolise them or how they were affected by them in some way, a spammer responds by saying 'I've never heard of this person, but how sad' . Also, a spammer wouldn't do this occasionally, but it would be a matter of course. |

Armageddon, you're no spammer. About 700 posts in a few months is not spamming, back in the day when me, Xen, and Xero hung around the Bg2 forums all the time, we averaged about 100 posts per week. I actually ran into Xero awhile back in his live journal, gave him an invite to come back to the forums but I guess real life still has him busy. |
Sometimes when I read short-sentenced messages by a spammer (and this could be Xen or someone else, really) it reminds me of the kind of huggy-cuddly posts that you see when some other member posts something he or she made. A poem or a song for instance. Those posts that judge the composition usually have no surplus in value whatsoever.
It irritates the hell out of me when people just say something is good because they don't have the guts to say something is not quite so good. Honesty is something easily lost in an online commmunity. And that's a shame. |
I'm certainly no spammer, for how long i've been on, i could have alot more posts, still without spamming. Although, i have barley ventured out the BG2 board, and i was absent for the first few months And i take fairly long breaks from the forum every so often, when i get real busy. I doubt that'll be happening any time soon, however, so you all have to put up with me for a while longer :D

Me over t'other forum, that's spamming..
Spamming is simply put posting to increase post count, this can be for the whole forum, or just an individual.. It can also be repeating somthing that's already been posted before, or replying just from the subject title.. |
Yes, Q, we both spammed Hive's forum quite enough....*brings back memories of the joys of new years eve* Aah, that was good fun...I don't really go there anymore, as you've probably noticed...I still check it out, but i rarley post.

I was a Manshoon untill about 6 months ago, where I came and actually started taking part in conversations and posting frequently, now I dont post as much as I used to, but I still post alot in most forums.
Dont worry, its when you hit 2000 that you start to wonder this all over again :D |
I know that 700 posts in a few months isn't oo much on it's own, but remember. That number would liely be much greater if I owned any o these other games and was able to contribute to forums outside of GD and Morrowind.

this post is spam
[EDIT] to me spam is a post with no real point. one line, no developed thought, and not even directed at the original post. i don't mind single line posts that express sympathy, birthday greetings, etc. and i don't even mind one line posts that simply agree with the original post or the poster above, so long as it's more than "i agree" [ 02-18-2005, 08:38 AM: Message edited by: RevRuby ] |
spam can and is also classified as starting a thread just to increase your post count (I admit to doing it myself in the past when my avatar was ready to change) sometimes it can be subtle, and sometimes less so, The more subtle you are the less likely you are to get in trouble for it (and it also helps if you're amusing to the "powers that be").
