This is a felony. A felony conviction can hurt him in a lot of ways. In many places, a convicted felon can't own a gun or vote. You should ask your lawyer about chances of success on appeal, appeal procedure, timeline, what will happen in the meantime -- and make him give you cost estimates up front (you may be able to wrangle a set fee out of him).
