Pretty much all of the above! Being a moderator isn't all status, it's a lot of work. Trolls, spammers.....Vaskez ( :D j/k) |
I never understand people who come to a board and ask how you become a Mod... I mean, Why would you want to? Is it your life goal to drive out spammers and trolls for the greater good, defend good forum ethics with your trusty sword of justce... or is it just a status symbol, would you feel more important and more powerful? would people look up to you if you were a mod...?
think about it |
Well Vaskez actually is a real spammer! 2 years and... that many posts?!?!

We already have enough moderators so that Trolls fall within seconds of their sighting, thanks to our current mods. Why add more, and create a 'too many chiefs, not enough indians' scenario?

Running shoes? A change of username is perhaps more adequate or a one way ticket to the Solomon Islands or something else remote :D

If age and low postcount were important factors to qualify as a Moderator, I would be wayyyy out of the shortlist.
Besides the obvious traits of being non-biased, highly-tolerant, firm-but-fair enforcer of rules, etc... it also helps if a Moderator is sociable. This helps to break the ice between the Moderator and the other members of the forum. He/She is not seen as a force to be wary of, but a friend. Friends tend to behave themselves better, and there will be less "I want to rebel against the authority" wannabes. To that end, wit, humour and a knack for spotting troublemakers are all important traits. The latter is especially important, because it is far easier to extinguish a simmering cinder, than a full-blown flame. A Moderator has to be able to distinguish between friendship and duty as well. One of the hardest thing to do as a Moderator is to reprimand a friend, or worse, a fellow Moderator. However, if it is justified, it has to be done or you will not be fit to be a Moderator anymore. There are perks to being a Moderator, but one must always remember that it is a JOB as well. To quote from the Spiderman comics, "With great power, comes great responsibility." |
