They probly wanted to see what was ripped open before they unscrewed it. It would suck majorly to take it out and find if was the only thing keeping a major artery sealed.

I guess this is a modern 'version' of the old wel known Phineas Cage accident. Phineas wasn't that lucky though: His brain received some damage :(
