Wait... are they important? I'm almost finished BG II and I didn't know that... I only have one star sapphire. =/

Not to worry, you'll find plenty of the gems needed to upgrade weapons & armour in ToB.

I started in ToB without importing from SoA and I found enough gems to upgrade everything i needed to, so you should be fine...

Actually, a diamond and a beljuril gem can be used by the merchant in Waukeen's Promenade to upgrade the Horn of Valhalla so that it will summon a higher-level berserk warrior. It is rather expensive though.

I just keep all my expensive/rare gems anyway, and store them in my stronghold. What good is house and home if I can't run barefoot through the wealth of nations?

One should save a Ring of Invisibility, if you intend to crossover to ToB from SoA.
