Dafan, those values are way too low! If a human lung can't contain more than 4 liters we would be panting all the time. Look at the original saying again "The average human lung holds 3.5 liters of air.". I interpret that as stating the total, or maximum, lung capacity. If you take a deep breath and exhale you don't empty the lungs so there is still air in them. ;) Therefore it is obvious that a lung can contain more air than you are able to exhale.

Just to add to these two that the first one is definately correct. It occurred on 27th August 1896, starting at 9.02am, and the turning point was when the entire Zanzibar navy (an ocean tramp named The Glasgow) was sunk with only two shells at 9.15am.
