So you are saying that Serbia is not in the running to become an EU member? I had thought all those little nations were on the list. Guess I was wrong, mea culpa.

LOL, no, "all those little nations" are not.
I got the impression that Serbia/Montenegro were candidates for the EU
from this website. I rerread it and it still looks like they are candidate states...unless my translation of Kandidaten is incorect...

Er no, if I remember correctly, the only little nations that are expected to join the EU in the coming years are Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Rumania, Cyprus, Malta, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Bulgary...

Yep. Agreed.

TL, your pictures for pig production are entirely accurate. Ones for the chicken industry would show even worse abuses. I have never understood people's shock when they see how an agricultural industry (and it is an industry, just like an auto assembly line or a steel mill) actually works. Everybody expects the absolute best quality of food to miraculously appear at very low cost. It seems that people think that food animals freely roam a lush pastoral range and then decide to walk up to the butcher where they lay down and peacefully die, surrounded by friends and kin. You can raise food animals in "humane" conditions. It just costs more. You can transport food animals in a "humane" manner. It just costs more. You can kill and process them in a less tramautic manner. It just costs more. Where I live I can buy poultry, beef, and pork that have all been treated/processed in this more "humane" manner. It just costs from 4-10 times as much as food done the other way. Whether it is actually humane to treat animals nice up to the point of killing and eating them is another question.

Antryg, it is the cost of feeding about 6 billion people, I think we could do with about 1/8th that population but they won't let me get rid of people :(

As far as I know Serbia & Montenegro haven't even applied yet. I might be wrong there, but I do know they haven't started the negotiations yet. While the countries that Melusine ennumerated have all fulfilled the requirements already and have also finished the negotiations and signed the agreements. I think they've all done that already. While Serbia & Montenegro isn't even close to joining the EU; as I said before, they haven't even started negotiating yet, and that usually takes years.
