The klez protection scam is ancient, but apparently some stupid buggers out there still wont scan there system. (And if anyone out there hasnt scanned their system and is offended by this, think about why im saying it)

Me, I use housecall (free online scanner) cos I /hate/ background scanners. Call me selfish, but I prefer to have as many MIPS as possible at my disposal, and I like to get into my files in a decent time as well.

Damned if i'll let some damned juvenile delinquents slow down my system if U dont have to.

Blooming script kiddies. *sigh*

i got an e-mail with a virus and the subject (after the virus had been taken out by Norton) was on food safety in prepartation (and that's not going to make me suspicious?)

I seem to get the virus that appears in Spanish with the subject "Hola" or similar with a .cpl attachment. These appear to get around Hotmail's virus controls.

I know that it's not their fault, but Ertai and Shadowstrider have sent me them recently :(

1) You should NEVER open emails from someone you don`t know. Especially not if they`re more than 1-2 kb.
2) Even if an attachment is from a trusted source, virus scan it before opening it. This goes for ANYTHING you download, even if it comes through a POP3 which scans for viruses itself.
3) Even if you have auto virus protection running, still scan for viruses manually.
4) Even with all of those precations, make sure your virus scanner is set to do a full system scan at least once per week.

This should protect you from most viruses

Oh, and ofcourse you should have reliable virus scanners- the most reliable are PC Cillin and Norton AntiVirus; McAffee despite common "knowledge" is NOT reliable- it has very outdated definitions, and can be very unstable at times. </font>

And don't forget .... your best and greatest AV is useless if it is out dated. **Download the latest definitions files weekly.*** ;)

LennonCook is absolutely right, always virus scan whether you know the people or not, and those you you who think that if they have got mail from people they know think again, email addresses can be easily spoofed, in a matter of seconds. Email providers use SMTP service(cant remember the port no) which can be easily exploited to send an email to anyone with any email address. SO please everyone be careful, better yet if you are paraniod about your computer's security you can get a firewall, black ice is one of the good ones, and remember if you you ever have problems regarding computer security contact me, i can probably help you.
