Even though I should be bored of it but I always multiclass my main PCs. Fighter/Mage is what I usually pick. They are very powerful at higher levels. To bad there is no elven chainmail in BG1. You can still cast spells in elven chainmail

There probably isn't much of a need to Dual Class in BG1. You will see a huge benefit of Dual Classing in BG2 and the expansion. I'm looking long term with BG2 expansion Throne of Bhaal in mind. My goal is to have a lvl 9 Fighter / 11 Thief / 30 Mage and a 11 Ranger / 39 Cleric.

I never tried dueling, I usually play none humans. Playing as a paladin is teh only time I played as a human.

Yes and no.

Dual classing is more useful when you want a few of the abilities of another class. For instance, if you want a thief that is good enough to get by then dualing Imoen is great. If you want a mage with higher hp, dualling a fighter to a mage is great. While dualling does cost you your first classes abilities for a while, you gain the benefit of only having to level a single class at a time, meaning you level faster. However, as you never increase in the first class again, that's it, that's all. Still, with the rate at which higher levels are gained, it's a big plus. The the time a multi-fighter/mage has hit 20ish in both his classes, a dualed fighter/mage will be 9/30.

The 'cost' of dual classing also varies based upon the game. I'm not a big fan of it myself, but it does work well in high xp games (such as IWD).

Anyway, basically if you are looking for a This that can do a little of That, then dual is great. If you are looking for This and That... then multi is the way to go.

Still the XP-cap is the problem when either dual-classing or starting a multi-class character. You simply cannot get enough XP to be taken seriously unless you somehow shed the XP-cap.

I try and solo a F/M/T in TeamBGs DSotSC which does just that and am at lvl 8/9/10 at the moment. This character functions well in all situations though it is a bit of a hassle to put on full plate armor for fighting, removing it for casting, putting on studded leather for dangerous thieves' work... (I have 'Twinkle' though hehe).
