Wouldn´t surprise me if he did something like that, quite desperate actually.

Hey, anything's possible right?
But I'm inclined to agree with Vaskez and Animal on this one. Sounds to me more like media sensationalism than news. But like Charlie says, never say never. |
Some people might find units comprised of Arabs in the US and UK military a bit suspicious. Of course there are idiots who will believe it just because it fits their preconceived notions of the militery.

I wonder who will be the first conspiracy theorist to suggest that this is a US and UK plot to commit atrocities and pretend that Saddam did them, pretending to be us? ;) After all, the USA is so eeeeeevil that the world would sooner believe a maniac dictator than you, right? ;) The UN security council will probably see it that way, and then we'd better watch out! After about 500 resolutions passed against us, they won't stand for that ;)
On a serious note, this sounds like just the kind of thing that Saddam would do. We know he's not above using innocent human shields. I doubt anything would stop him killing and torturing his own people in a propoganda excercise. He already does it now, just for fun (and because he is insane). At least getting this out in the open before serious military action takes place will lessen the initial shock impact of such Iraqi press-releases (read : blatant lies) as "American troops shoot innocent villiagers while UK troops laugh", or whatever. |

thats the way you should bring it It'd be a brilliant militairy step it put those 15k soldiers in the mids of the us army to disable them from the inside out But that cant possibly be the reason why saddam has ordered those uniforms after all he's a monster aint he? and monsters dont have brains.... |

just a thought here, if people believe that the news said Saddam did those things. would they believe if the news reported that US and UK ordered 15k uniform identical to Iraqi uniforms so that their troops would look like Iraqis?

Everyone keeps forgetting one tiny detail here. You can dress 15000 Iraqi's like GI's, but they still wouldn't look very western. Or do you think Saddam sends them to a plastic surgeon first ?

It's too silly to be true... Saddam may be a cruel and crazy dictator, but he's not that dumb to think that a 15,000 costume order wouldn't get noticed on the US "radar" and not be used against him in a period he's still trying to buy more time.
Nevertheless, taken from CNN:
Central Command: Iraq ordered U.S., U.K. military uniforms
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In an effort to blame the United States and United Kingdom for war atrocities, the U.S. Central Command charged Thursday that Iraq will dress members of a paramilitary force in uniforms from the two countries while hurting his own people. In a written statement, Jim Wilkinson, Central Command's director of strategic communications, said, "Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has ordered the procurement of military uniforms identical down to the last detail to those of the U.S. and U.K. forces." "Saddam intends to issue these uniforms to Fedayeen Saddam troops, who would wear them when conducting reprisals against the Iraqi people so that they could pass the atrocities off as the work of the United States and the United Kingdom," Wilkinson said. "This campaign of fear and misinformation would represent the latest chapter in Saddam Hussein's long history of brutal crimes against the innocent people of Iraq." The Fedayeen Saddam, or "Saddam's Men of Sacrifice," are a paramilitary force of more than 15,000 men, according to senior U.S. military officials. The Fedayeen were founded in 1995 by Saddam Hussein's son, Uday, who also runs a major daily newspaper. Many members of the organization are in their teens and were recruited in areas noted for loyalty to the Iraqi leader. According to information available on the White House Web site, authorities withheld school examination results to students unless they registered in the Fedayeen Saddam organization. The government Web site also said members of the Fedayeen Saddam have killed senior religious clerics and desecrated mosques and holy sites. The salaried force carries out patrols and anti-smuggling duties and is separate from the regular Iraqi army command, reporting directly to the presidential palace, according to U.S. officials. Though not an elite force, the group does deal with unrest during an emergency. ================================================== =========================== edit: what I considered to be the silliest part of the entire case doesn't seem to be confirmed in the CNN article... Reeka was talking about a 15,000 costume order, while the article is only stating that Saddam ordered costumes for a paramilitary force that counts 15,000 men; it doesn't say that all of these actually get a uniform, however. When I originally made my post, I was mostly wondering why he needs 15,000 costumes if he's just trying to get some incriminating footage of "men-in-US-uniforms-killing-innocent-civilians"; heck, in that case, even 50 costumes would have done the trick nicely. But as the article doesn't say anything about 15,000 costumes being ordered for the reasons mentioned in the article (while actually only a fraction of that number of uniforms would have sufficed to get the same effect, which also wouldn't be that transparent and conspicuous to US intelligence agencies as ordering 15,000 costumes at the same time), it doesn't have that Onion/Monty Python-absurdness written all over it anymore. It might be true. [ 03-08-2003, 06:31 PM: Message edited by: Grojlach ] |
