The 3rd ID's situation is shameful, with no clear plan in place for troop rotation before the occupation, the brass kept giving return-home dates and yanking them back like a dis-tasteful game of keep away. All the while soldiers trained to fix electronics and man artillery guns are being used as security gaurds in what has been charcterized as a shooting gallery. The pentagon is finally expected to announce a troop rotation plan this week. About freaking time! Only a few months overdue by my reckoning.
There is alot more evident than the unexpected escalting guerilla resistance to suggest the occupation of Iraq was poorly planned and is being poorly executed. Here is an editorial to touch on some of the key financial points. Editorial Quote:

Yes Ranger, it is. If I remember correctly it's called insubordination. And these whiners need to shut up. In the WWII the soldiers and sailors were gone for years. In the US some of them were gone from December of 41 to late 45, early 46. And with the UK and other allies it started in september of 39. These guys don't know what hardship is.

Todays level of soldier is based off of todays society. In the 80s it was nothing to do a 45 day field exercise, be back for a couple weeks and go somewhere else for another 40-50 days, and that was the Cold War Army. Today if we are gone more than 30 we get seperation pay, and all sorts of other benefits that were unheard of back then. |

Amazing how, while humans strive to make life better, there are always grumpy people complaining that life was better before ... when it was harder. Why ? What is better in a harsher life ? Is it that you think it makes us stronger ? Better go back to stone age then. ;) |
Rush to war? We debated and re debated the whole thing for 14 months...That ain't exactly a rush to war.

Sorry but I still think my first thaught on getting rid of Saddam was the way to go..Assinate the bastard! The hell with protical, look how many lives could have been saved AND the bastard WOULD be dead!!!

In 1985 I spent 263 days training, and came back from NTC victorious. Today; You only stop training long enough to deploy. 2002 I spent 312 days either training or deployed, and have 2 new ribbons. Next year at the current anticipation level, we will have less than 50 days home. The rest will be training then deployment. And this makes today better because...? |

I agree with john. A highly-skilled sniper team can demoralize a vastly superior force by taking out only a dozen commanders. It is a shame that our government steadfastly maintains a position of "moral superiority" by refusing to use a very useful tool. This may be a failure of some sort on my part, but if I were in power I would use snipers--at the very least they are cost-effective and an excellent deterrent. Don't forget that snipers were a central part of the American Revolutionary forces....</font> |
Wow its been awhile since Ive been here....My whole point wasnt how much more difficult things were back in WWII or even The Gulf War. The lads were sent in to do a job which they did. They were givin their orders and their return dates (assuming they survived part 1) but the Gov. just keeps pushing that return date back. Just seems to me that things have been falling apart ever since the American Soldier put that American flag on Saddams statue. Its also pretty hard to compare military strategy of 1945 to military strategy of 2003. Human rights have evolved alot since then as well as our understanding of the human brain and factors that can lead to a catastrophic (sp?) mental breakdown.
