Hm...the only time Hendak died for me was when I killed him myself (Evil game). The Rep point and EXP aren't that important, what's crucial is whether Bernard knows how cool you are, as then he will open up to you some goods that he kept hidden away before, including a VERY nice Axe. Talk to Bernard, and if one of your conversation options involves "Hendak said he'd give me a discount," you're good to go.
