Hello dere!!!! Personally, I haven't even been here two weeks. I "joined" the group by just jumping in with both feet. I toss in some humorous comments when applicable (and sometimes when not) and everyone SEEMS to have taken to me quite well. You might do the same. I feel I get a better sense of who someone is by their humor than by their serious side (although you DO need to see both sides).
