If you really find no way to fix this, then you could always use a cheat to warp you out of the sphere.

When you try to talk to lavok, does it say he is busy? If so you should download the official BG2 patch.

Is he actually dead? When you leave to fulfill the quest for the demon's heart, rest once or twice, and return, is he gone?

Try casting a few heal spells on him, then. I found that Lavok was so injured by my party's attack in one game that he actually died before I could return with the quest item. I went back to a save, and healed him up a bit. This left him healthy enough to survive until the heart was in place.
