wizardry 8 is one of my favorite games ever.

wizards and warriors i liked a lot too actualy. I would give that another shot with help from the wizards and warriors forum here, if you already have it.

Oh absolutely kotor is much better. Divine divinity is a lot cooler than toee. Gothic 1 and gothic 2 are awesome.

I've been thinking about TOEE, but I've got to find the right bargain bins

Out of curiousity, what didn't you like about the interface to W&W? I've played it a few times, and it's not the worst one I've run into... as the mighty stamar mentioned, you might come on over to the W&W board and see if we can help you through it.

Hmmm... since you mentioned you got as far as the crypt... did you by chance get stuck not being able to get in? That is, by far, the most common problem people have with the game, and usually the thing that brings 'em over to IW to begin with And it's a really simple answer, too -- there's a door lever on the side wall, in the shadows.

I played Divine Divinity once, perhaps twice... not quite interesting enough to me for replay. Beyond Divinity, which recently came out, is supposed to be much better. I've also played Wiz8, but I don't like so much sci fi in my CRPG environments. Swords and lasers? I don't think so, Tim... And I'm also replaying Might and Magic VI at the moment with a tank party.

Dungeon Lords is supposed to be coming out soon. Authored by DW Bradley of Wizardry and W&W fame, it looks like it will be a good one.

No, I did get in all right. If I remember correctly the last thing that had happened before I quit was my party falling down from a stairway or something, and I could not find an easy way back up/out. But that was not the main issue, the user interface was.

The turn-based mode did not seem quite turn-based enough. I set the turn speed to the lowest possible and checked that turn-based was on, but the monsters were still moving around and attacking my party while I was trying to choose spells to cast. It took me an inordinate amount of clicks to find the magic missile or whatever, trying to avoid the monster attacks at the same time. That's what I hated. Maybe I have misunderstood the "turn-based" part in this game, or maybe I was not using it as I was supposed to.

But in any case, if I should decide to retry the game, I will use the relevant board (thanks for the suggestion). Maybe I will, once I have completed the Temple.

You know, I really like turn based games too, but saying that real-time or "quick decision" games can't be just as strategically complex is pretty crazy. Go read the 8 page thread on Total War if you don't think so. Hell, even professional Chess is played with a clock.
