The helm set your aligment to the oposite of your real one:

Lawfull Good <-> Chaotic Evil
Lawfull Neutral <-> Chaotic Neutral
Lawfull Evil <-> Chaotic Good
Neutral Good <-> Neutral Evil
True Neutral <-> True Neutral
