Thanks promethius, a very helpful thread.

Does that mean I was very unwise putting enchantment as a major skill? Is it really not useful at all, even when at a high level?

no, if you plan on using enchanted items (even ones which you purchase) it is important to have enchantment as a skill. while even a 100 enchantment doesnt let you cast powerful enchantments, what it does is reduces the cost of using the weapon each time you strike, effectively allowing you to use the weapon for a longer time before switching to your next enchanted weapon.

if you actually WANT to cast high level enchantments (or just raise your enchantment skill) then first take LOTS of pieces of paper and either have them enchanted with a STRONG spell of fortify enchantment, or enchant them with as much as you can successfully accomplish. the fortify enchantment must last for about 10 seconds. use the scrolls that you made. now enchant more papers with fortify enchantment and use them one yourself, you should be able to make your own and make them much higher level this time. do it again (this takes ALOT of enchanting, so petty and common soul gems filled are going to be important). once you have done this process about three times, (quickly) you should have an enchantment skill of about 1000 to 3000, depending on repetitions and strength of spells/scrolls. quickly try to enchant your powerful item and you'll enjoy a 50/50 success rate. if you fail, however, you will lose the soul gem and the soul (accept azura's star, but you still lose the soul).

thats why i just pay for my enchantments. its not bad that you had enchant as a primary skill. id go to the master trainer and get it trained up to 100. it can still be used to effectively level up anyway. for the master trainer, look for Qorwyn at the indoranyon fort, shes the only one who you can pay to train you up to 100.

He is hostile upon approach. so take a calm humanoid spell with you and cast it on him so that you can talk to him and train with him.

dont forget to charm him as well, or you have to calm him every time you train with him.

Thank you both, although i'm only level 2 at the moment so will be a little while before i've got the cash needed for that.

First time of playing through with a mage-like character, just discovering alchemy at the moment so running around with my pockets bursting with herbs. It's amazing how much replay value this game has.

ugh, i made the mistake of making alchemy as a skill for my assasin. luckily its not that hard to increase, but i forget where i hid my grandmasters stuff in my fortress.
