how about just a plain ol' fighter/thief. I just started my first and I'm taking him through BG1 first then importing him to BG2. He's the most versatile character, and he has about 80% of the kills in my party. I used to always play mages, but never really had any fun because they wouldn't actually do anything. At her highest point, Imoen (I dualed her to a mage right away), had 10% of the kills, now she has like 6 or 7%. Gren, my elven F/T stats are:

Str 18/00 (I got lucky on that roll)
Dex 19
Con 16
Int 9
Wis 8
Cha 16

And I didn't even roll for that long (the total is 86). I don't have the patience to roll for an hour. As bad ass as he his now, think of how he'll be if I use an innate draw upon holy might. He's pretty uber for an average point total character. Even after I tome him, his point total will only be 92 (which is actually rather low for a tomed character.
