Actually, we are! Everyone in the world writes it like that, as far as Major nations go. I know that is how it is done in Mexico and South America. And since we were newer than England, (many of us can find some of our roots there), we are the ones that are backwards.
In fact, if you want some more fun info...English is not the official language of the US, because the Congress has never made that declaration, and when that bill tries to get passed, they shoot it down every time. Thus we are a mixed breed of all other nations.

England is in fact also opposite the rest of the world in at least one way, they drive on the left side of the road while the rest of the world drives on the right side.

I am of the understanding that, much to the horror of any English language purists here in England who accuse Americans of speaking a degraded form of English, that actually US English has changed less than UK English and is closer to so-called 'proper' English.
