Lesser basilisk? Giant spider? Hmm... my Avenger could shapeshift into a baby wyvern, a salamander, and a sword spider. I found the sword spider and the mage spells pretty handy toward the beginning of the game, but the Avenger seemed to lose his effectiveness as the quests got tougher...
