Neither did I, I read it in a walkthrough though, and did it the second time I played through the game.

i forget if its daleson or another servant who is still alive in the house... but in a conversation with him, he tells you that the nasty things that dig will only eat their meals in the area of the jail cells where the long tunnel is.

i knew that, i had the stew, but my problem was that i never knew the umber hulks were the tunnelers. i expected to find the creatures a lot closer to the tunnels, like in the jail cells proper. but for some reason, i NEVER think of umber hulks as being diggers. i imagine some kinda mole critters. *lol*

I didnt know you could make a stew for the umber hulks. I always used cloudkill and got about 20,000 exp for killing them.
