wearboar, correct me if i'm misinterpreting what you describe, but it sounds like the bishop can cast xray, which he qualified for with 45 mage skill, at 7 green by virtue of his skill in the mental college, around 95-100.
so, not only does it not matter how many levels of mage-specific caster he had, but it also didnt matter that he didnt run up the mage spellbook further. that's great observations, wearboar, thanks! refining the summary i stated earlier to incorporate this would mean: there is a level requirement to casting green dots, where you get 1 green dot for each spellcaster (not specific to the spellcaster school) exp level equal to or above the exp level at which you qualified to learn the spell (eg you can cast level 1 spells at 7 green at exp level 7 or higher), subject to minimum levels in the realm (eg fire), with only minor effect, if any, from the realm (eg mage) skill. ..depending on the situation, I often cast in the orange. It's a lot more fun when the spell does work than always casting green at lower levels! Sometimes I even cast spells like Quicksand in the red, there's nothing more fun than that spell going off!
