Think of it as an oppertunity to put on continuous mode, watch some TV, get something to eat, go to the bathroom, go on holidays....

The only time i've seen the so called "Help" turn on me, is when i accidentally targeted one during combat. Hitting the green guy instead of the monster doesn't seem to matter.
In Trynton one of my favorite tactics is to get the trinnie between me and the monsters, let them take the punishment and any accidental deaths from my ranged weapons, just gives me more goodies to pick up. Eventually there won't be any more green dots to get in my way.
