Cash does become important: it's really nice to have half a mil or so when you get to Ferro!

I don't understand about the levels. How do I increase them? I've changed my alchemist into a Mage already...I have no clue what "level" hes on! He's doing much better for me though=)HELP!!!OH! And I changed my lord into a rouge just because I am stuck in the basement of the jail in arnika and nobody could open the lock on the door...now he can..???Was that a bad choice??I still cant get into the door!!LOL ~naud

That lock is intended to be practically un-pickable, and is often used to 'practice' lock picking. Try and open it a few times, exit the lock picking menu, and watch for increases. Use the teleporter in the corner of the room to escape: If you DID manage to pick the lock, you'd have to fight all the bank guards.

If you go to the screen for an individual character, his level appears below his portrait.

Locks & Traps develops much faster if you practise on trapped chests. You just have to click on the magnifying glass repeatedly, and save every 5 skill increases or so in order to have less to repeat if the trap blows. I read a book while my character is practising, and i can see the change in the screen in periferal vision to know when to click again; it's a bit slow. But you have to move the pins on a lock at least 3 times as much to get a skill point.
That lock is really good for practising Knock-Knock, gives a realm point almost every time, and every 3-4 times you get the school. (Alc or Wiz, depending on your caster)

You get levels mostly for killing stuff; you can see how many levels your char had of each class by clicking on the class name in the screen you get when you click on a char's name in the inventory screen.

Rogue might indeed be more fun to play than a Lord.
You've already gone up levels, obviously, cause that's the only time you can change class...
