Hi,

@Zuljin
Yes i played Darklands and loved it. The graphic was crappy but the game was good. I never solved it, something i was missing every time i tried to stop the devil...
never found out what :-(
I still have my party on my computer and the game is in my shelf. But the graphic is too anoying to play again. But the virtue system was cool.
I made a pen and paper RPG out of it , was great fun, only alchemy and divine (pagan) magic (based on d100).

Ok cu

Yeah, the graphics are scary as was the fighting really. One good part of the graphics i'v noticed as time has aged the rest, would be the sketch-like city interfaces, not really sure what you would call it since im up to speed on my artistic vocab. The city streets and churchs, town hall, etc all look good even today. I have two boxs for the game on my shelf, when I thought I lost one in a move I found the 2nd for 4 bucks, new.. I might have had to reinstall a floppy drive to load it.

Hi,

@Zuljin

Yep ur right, that menues are at least good even today. But sadly no one will redesign the graphic engine for this game ... so the others will never know what cool game they are missing... *sigh*
God ol' days...
Did u solved the game ? I am wondering how the finale would have been....

Ciao

Damn it has been such a long time.. lets see, I dont think I won, but I do remember fighting something huge.. there was a dragon but don't think that was it.. maybe something called the great hunt, and when that was over the game was, or you could continue, kinda thing.. dunno anymore really. I am for sure creating and starting out was much more fun than being halfway through the game, so I started over quite abit. You know another great thing about that game was the historical ah acuracy, specifically the german cities.. I have this fascination with german these days and the black forest.. but I dont ever remember reading anything about it.. maybe it is based here =)

I finished Darklands, and after defeating the Big Bad Demon you could go on playing indefinitely. It had very good graphics for its time, though I thought the combat system was rather cumbersome. I think it's too bad that they never came out with the expansion. There was one bug I remember exploiting, St. Agnes (?) was only supposed to raise Local Favor once per town, but she'd actually do it almost every time you prayed to her. Ah, those were the good old days.

I can't remember getting as much gaming satisfaction as I get from Wiz8 in a long time. I think Ultima 6, my first CRPG, was comparable.

Does anyone remember the debate in CGW mag between Johnny Wilson and Scorpia over the ending in Darklands? Over a series of issues they argued the flaws and merits of the game, focusing on the end where you had to sacrifice one of your characters. Johnny felt strongly that it was wrong to ask you to sacrifice a character you'd been developing through an entire game. He said so in a side bar in the same issue as her review. She came back in the next issue and defended her stance saying that it made the sacrifice real. I think it went on but I don't remember. Pity you don't hear this kind of disagreement more in todays gamerags. There were also less rules in game design then. All hail the OLD SCHOOL!
