You really only need the Sleep spell at the beginning if you're in a party anyways. Level 2 is probably the worst level of spells, IMO.

Yeah, but sleep sucks if you plan on importing this character to BG2, where it's useless. </font>
By the time you get to BG2, you're probably using Magic Missile and Identify exclusively (with maybe Friends if you have a low Charisma), so Sleep's as good a spell as any to pick.

I've never used sleep before. I just use magic missile and identify for bg 1 and 2. but im not what you would call "1337" at this game. I'm reasonably new to the game.

I imagine some mod that allows to use BG2 rules in BG1 like BGTuTu

Horror works wonders in BG1. I'm not a very big fan of chromatic orb, however. Charm can also be very useful, although you can get some items to cover that instead of spending a spell slot on it.

It is truly less than three.

To revisit Sleep... When I played BG the first time I wasn't a seasoned veteran, obviously. I played IWD only after finishing ToB, and it was interesting to revisit low levels and come up with new strategies. I found that Sleep offered excellent bang for my buck, and urge anyone who hasn't used it to try it out.

i use chromatic orb in bg1 all the time. its like having hold monster as a 1st level spell once you get high enough.

I have just played bg1 using bg2 engine called BGT.. baldurs gate trilogy. It works great . look for it, I was able to use the kits and other mods (including bags) in the game of Bg1.

Mirror image is the best spell in the game...you cant really argue against it (BG1 or BG2)

it sucks in IWD though
