If that's <u>The Two Towers</u> you were reading, read it again. If it's some online (or otherwise) plot summary or similar spoiler, ignore it completely until you're (completely) read the book.

Grima does sort-of try to kill Saruman in TTT, when he hurls the Palantir from above, at the conclusion of "The Voice of Saruman." It may have been aimed at Gandalf, it may have been aimed at Saruman, but instead it misses both: "His aim was poor, maybe," said Gandalf, "because he could not decide which of us he hated more."
