Just to sum up from another thread:
Elminster CANNOT (to my knowledge) be killed in BG1 as he does not recieve any damage. You may hit him alright and you may even poison him for all it matters. He just doesn't get a scratch. http://www.dsr.kvl.dk/~maddog/Baldr014.jpg I have tried this before and now once again just to show that it cannot be done. BGT is an entirely different game where you have access to spells and features unavaible in "true" BG1. And what is the talk about killing the Demonknight on the ground floor? I have only met him in the mirror hall. Is there a procedure to get him to appear? |
He should appear to slay most of your tour group in the main hall of the first floor of Durlag's Tower.

Arrrrh. The tour. Hah. I never took the tour. Interesting. I always thought that was a Ulgoth Beard scam artist. I never occured to me that the trip was genuine. It seemed so out of place. "Let's take some rookies to one of the most dangerous sites on the Sword Coast". Is he harder? I frequently slay him without breaking the *spoily* in the cellar. Or is it merely difficult due to time restraints?
|
It's the time restraints that make the ground-floor demonknight difficult: I can't really say how long he's there before Dimension Dooring away (due to the amount of Pausing I do in tough fights), but I don't think it's more than 5 seconds. He also seems to have some hefty damage resistances: In the screenshots I took, most of the text lines are filled with him taking piddling little bits of damage, like 1 or 2 at a time.
The screenshots I took of the battle aren't on my Geocities server anymore--I'll check tonight to see if they're on my computer at home. If not, my slaying of the demonknight will just have to slip quietly away into the realm of legend. (Or maybe I could get my BG1 discs back from my friend....) |
Or somebody crazy enough could try to repeat the feat and make it an insane trial by fire.
Don't point fingers at me, 'cuz I am not going to even attempt. It will take some serious research to find out the best ways to damage him and (most importantly) I don't think I could actually do it. Under the assumption that he engages and kills all the other tour people in close combat and then departs I would probably start with casting Otilukes on one of them to buy some time. Update on Elminster: He does not take damage from magic. He has 100% magic resistance, which is inpenetrable in BG1. Even with magic missiles (where the magic res fails occationally for some reason) he does not get a scratch. I can think of several ways to kill him in BGT and I am running out of options in BG1. Darts of stunning are worthless too. Gorion can be killed (with an imported character - he is worth 400XP for those who wonder) but you will perish shortly after in a scripted death. I have a screenshot if it could be of any interest. [ 06-03-2004, 07:08 AM: Message edited by: mad=dog ] |
Well, I've managed to kill Tethoril before (I only tried once though, and it wasn't exactly hard IIRC, he doesn't really put up a fight) in the library. I think the Gatewarden was chasing me around as well, which made it annoying, plus Tethoril had an insane amount of HP. I know in BG2, there's a version of Elminister with 1800 HP, so Tethoril may have been like that as well, and the Elminister in BG1 may be like that too, which is why it seemed like he wouldn't die.

Actually Lord, as you may have overlooked, in the screen shot Elminster never "takes" any damage. He gets hit, but nothing happens. It's like he's wearing the "Big Red Cloak of Invincibility"

Spot on firestormalpha. The only thing I haven't tried is polymorphing him, but I am not sure how that would count. You'll have to scum Greater Ghouls at the bottom of Durlags to get enough bolts of polymorphing though. They occationally drop one and it is the only place I have seen them. There is no other option for polymorphing others in BG1 to my knowlegde. I am sure it will be caught by his magic res though, but then again - poison from a missile went through.
I will leave that experiment to others. I am not that keen on trying. |

True, I don't think it's in basic BG, but neither is Durlag's Tower. |
Touche. Allow me to elaborate. BG1/totsc then. Regardless only the polymorph self spell is available short of a cheat. However it prooved to do absolutely nothing. Polymorphsm goes straight into the mag res.
I pelted him and poisoned him repeatedly and CTRL+Q'ed him into the party to see if he got damage "underneath". Not a scratch. |
