They level up when you do, yes, but at the same time they are in your party and so affect the percentage of XP that you receive. Killing a goblin without a henchman will get you more xp than killing one with.

From reading similar topics at the Bioware forums...
The Original Campaign (OC) assumes you are one level higher for each follower you bring along (henchman, familiar, animal companion or summons). Your experience total will be reduced by having followers but your chalange will also be greater (eg. fighting 5 goblins instead of just 3). Your followers will each get a slice of the experience pie but it will be a bigger pie. In the end, I believe, you will level up slower than going solo but no as badly as some people would have you believe... |
