I am curious about this myself. I was using a monk when I encountered these golems. I found that when I hit them it appeared as if I was doing damage, however, his status remained unharmed. I did this for a while with no visible result; I had to find and kill the wizards first.

Monks equipped with kamas count as fighting unarmed. Which means you'll get the benefits of extra damage and enchantments, but not the penalties a monk would usually recieve for fighting with a weapon. Although fighting with just two hands would be more in character for some monks depending on your 'background'.

Monks Rule. I finished with a monk. I usually had a henchman. I used tommy the rouge for his find/remove trap ability and open locks. He isn't too bad in combat either.

It took a very long time since I was only doing a couple of damage a hit. This was a while ago, so it may have been fixed in the latest patch. I completed the game just after the first patch came out.

Welp, i retried as a monk again...
tip: do not be a small race, they have a major disadv as a small race
that was my problem the first time i tried it, she couldnt kick down any doors or open any boxes because of her weak attacks, 2nd time around i went dwarven and i gota say 20th level monk is *insane* shes like 3 times as powerful as my first char which was a rogue; probably twice as powerful as the fighter i made once.

I kinda got sick of her after a few mods, her being practicaly unkillable made the game kinda boring.

Course now i remade a new rogue...and i have trouble killing just about everything *bleeds all over the place* mostly because of the incredably large number of backstab/critical immune mobs, as a rogue that is my main source of damage; thats part of why monks are so powerful - they do rogue type damage that isnt formatted to be a critical or sneak attack so it passes to just about anything.

And hrm...i experimented a little...and it seems that if i wanted to i could level up a monk to 19th and then have rogue as my 20th; saving up all of my skill points along the way and simply train all of the rogue abilities at the end; this would make a monk who still kicks butt (wont have the 20/+1 reduction that a 20th monk would have) and be able to pick any lock/disarm any trap etc etc that a rogue would be capable of....when i think about that...its kinda lame to be able to do that really.

Off topic I know but...

Im not sure about NWN Monks, but in 3rd edition ADND, at level 20, Monks are just fun to play. 20/+1 Dam Reduct, Tongue of the Sun and Moon allows them to speak to every living creature, you can fall very long distances and not take much damage at all, and of course a monks's dodge save takes off all damage, rather than half, monks WIS mod adds to overall AC, man, they're great ^_^
