I think you're prevented from accessing the area of the main gate to Baldur's. At least until you have progressed to where you are able to enter the city proper. As such, you can't get passed it to the farm land below Ulgoth's. I know I can't in my games at least.

Exactly how close CAN you get to the city of Baldur's Gate? And how close to Ulgoth's?

Have been visiting the little farm where those big green thingies (can't remember the correct spelling) pop up all the time.

That place and bandit camp.

Have I messed up the game after leaving the documents behind?

Okay, so what happens when you go North from the Ankheg Farm? You should get to the Bridge map, and *if* you've beaten the Cloakwood Mines, you should be able to get across that bridge.

Going north from the Bridge map will get you to Ulgoth's.

If your game doesn't behave the way that I've just described, you've got some funky-ass bugs.

That chapter (entry to Baldur's Gate) is initiated from the scrolls in the mine - and only from the scrolls in the mine. I can get to the Ankheg farm, right from the very of the game, but no further north until I've given Cloakwood a good cleaning.

I take it that Jan has the same sequence of events. In which case he's b*ggered, 'cause he didn't set off the chapter intro by reading the scrolls. Try the edit in with Gatekeeper. Annoying that, Jan. Let us know how it goes.

I can go to both the Bridge (Amn) and Ulgoth's Beard + a little farm or something.

Does it mean that my game is ok?

Sounds ok to me
From the bridge aera (cross the bridge) you should be able to enter Baldur's Gate.

Good luck

That's great 'cos I have deleted old save files.

Yep I can enter Baldur's Gate.

Actually, the debate on "what exactly starts Chapter 5?" is somewhat heated; I know for a fact that I've gotten Chapter 5 to start without opening Davaeorn's chests & taking the documents. As long as you:
A) Kill Davaeorn
B) Read the documents in his storeroom, and
C) Flood the Mines,
Chapter 5 will start and you can enter BG city with no problems.

The Ankheg Farm, the eastern half of the Bridge map, and Ulgoth's Beard are all accessible in Chapter 1. You have to wait until Chapter 5 for the western side of the Bridge, the Zombie Farm, and BG city.

Good clear advice from Six as usual. I have got involved with the 'Chapter 5 trigger' debate before and I suspect that it changes depending on the state of the patch installation. My game always used to trigger Ch5 on reading the scrolls, but now I have changed the installation it always triggers the moment Davaeron is killed, so there can be more than one answer.

Best advice is to always check in the Journal that Ch5 is initiated before flooding the mine - better safe than sorry.
