The first time I ran into them I was talking with Torin, a bunch of Ratlings attacked me and all of a sudden the Mantraps appeared. Before I knew what was happening, 2 of my characters were dead, one of them being my wizard http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif. So I just went berserk, went into melee combat, actually killed one, then got killed by 3 others.

MERLIN'S SHIELD! MERLIN'S SHIELD!! MERLIN'S SHIELD!!! Another helpful tools: Snakeskin Trait or Algamesh's Amulet - but they aren't so good.
The Merlin's Shield spell makes their poison attack unusable - I have never been poisoned if I cast the spell enough soon. During one encounter, I fought 4 of them simultaneously and lost 0 HP. And I fought - I didn't cast spells.
Therefore, cast Merlin's Shield then decide how to remove the plants from the game. Firestorm or Meteorstorm works great. Good weapons are useful, too.
