I've gotten the feeling that we can start a new game with already existing characters that have some experience, etc. However, I am not exactly sure how this works. Does that character retain any of their armor, weapons, etc? I have a Zenmaster that I am particularly fond of and was thinking of doing a solo play with him before I get really adventurous and send a brand, spankin' new solo character out into the wild of the Gael Serran.

Yes, CyberPixie, you can just Revert Game I believe is the correct answer to restarting the game with your Zenmaster. It just resets all the quests and begins the game anew.
