BG2 has a slightly different system for weapon proficiencies. Instead of Large Swords, you have Two Hander, Bastard Sword and Longsword. And similar for the other classes. You also have weapon styles - Two Handed, Sword and Shield and Dual Weilding. Because of this, you have to re-select your points anyway.

ah okay, my poor char is gonna be abused when he goes to bg2 i think, hardly any point importing is there? unless i do my repeat import/export thing and import him as 25 stats across the board.

I exported my basic paladin to BG2, and she's doing fine. She just uses a Longsword, bow and flail.

Well, you get your stats, includding any tome upgrades, so an imported character can be substantialy more powerful than anything you can generate in BG2 itself. And there are a few items that follow you into BG2 (all of them can if you cheat, but thats another story)
