Did you try using Vanish on yourself to get by? I had same problem getting by, so I backed up out of the water to the edge and cast vanish and I was past it, took a few try but it does work and no toads were hurt in the making of this move.

Ahhh.... You took my very bad advice...
It gets to the point where you just get so upset with things, that if you don't kill them, you will feel worse as a living being... Some things are just to stupid to survive.
Were you able to get the quest done? And don't worry about Valeia, I've left a couple of bruisers back there in case any one comes calling.

What is odd is that there seem to be no consequences for doing that. I still touched the Toadem, killed the Scabban guys, and I even picked up the spear which got dropped by the Shinwicki group when I killed them.

Does the game hold this against the Paladin (and can I get therapy for the poor guy; he feels terrible) and/or do I need a live Shinwicki later in the game?

Ukabu, why you kill toads? Toads need Ukabu and Ukabu need toads. Toads very mad, not share Ukabu brew with bad warm skin.

Drop warm skin in Toad sh**house, leave in there for many moons. Warm skin see many more moons while there too.
